Gloucester has its first ever Black mayor, following the appointment of independent councillor Adrian Graham this May 2026.
A DJ and former care worker, pub landlord and events organiser, Adrian was elected by his fellow councillors to become the city's 546th mayor at a Gloucester City Council meeting on Monday 18 May 2026, according to local democracy reporter Carmelo Garcia.
Succeeding Liberal Democrat Ashley Bowkett, he's also Gloucester's first-ever independent mayor, representing Matson, Robinswood and White City as part of the Community Independents Group on the council.
He has chosen The Venture in White City and Great Ormond Street Hospital as his two charities for the year, while Liberal Democrat Anne Radley, who represents Elmbridge, has been elected as the new sheriff and deputy mayor of Gloucester.
Adrian grew up in Gloucester having moved to the city when he was four years old, and bar a three-year stint in London, has lived there ever since.
He told councillors upon his election: 'I think there are going to be a lot of people in Gloucester wondering how a DJ ended up becoming a mayor. But this city has always been full of unexpected stories.
'The truth is, I’m just a normal guy, a father, a husband, a guy who likes playing music and creating nostalgic moments for people'.
He said he 'never expected to become a councillor, let alone the city’s mayor', or the first independent mayor in the city's history.
'That’s why this role means so much to me,' he added. 'I understand what everyday life looks like to everyday people in this city.
'I’m truly honoured to serve as your mayor this year. And I promise I will do my utmost to highlight the beauty, strength and heart of this incredible city.'
