First CEO appointed to take Gloucester heritage venue 'to the next level'

Aiming to ensure its sustainability as a wedding, events and heritage venue for the long term, the trust which operates Gloucester's Llanthony Secunda Priory has appointed its first chief executive.

A former interim chief executive of Gloucester Culture Trust, James Garrod was also involved in setting up and managing the JOLT creative business hub in Kings Square.

Gloucester's Llanthony Secunda Priory has appointed its first ever CEO, as part of a project which aims to ensure its financial sustainability and resilience for the long term.

The charity which manages the historic wedding, events and cultural venue, Llanthony Secunda Priory Trust, has appointed James Garrod as its chief executive, this July 2026.

A Gloucester resident and University of Gloucestershire graduate, James was previously programme and operations manager at Gloucester Culture Trust, where he also had two spells as interim chief executive.

His appointment is part of a £235,000, National Lottery-funded project from the trust, aimed at ensuring it can continue to manage, restore and preserve the site for the benefit of the public for years to come.

James will be tasked with leading a new leadership and operational structure, overseeing staff and volunteer development, and driving forward a refreshed income generation and fundraising strategy.

He commented: 'I’m thrilled to be Llanthony Secunda Priory Trust’s first CEO. The opportunity to impact the historic site and shape its story is something I’m very passionate about. I’m looking forward to joining a great team and developing a vision that will allow more people to enjoy the historic site whilst ensuring its future as an asset to the city.'

Paul James, chair of trustees at the charity, said: 'We were fortunate to have a strong field of candidates to choose from, but James’ experience and his passion made him an ideal fit for this role. I’m looking forward to working with James, alongside our Board of Trustees, to take Llanthony to the next level.'

Set within the historic remains of a 12th-century priory, Llanthony Secunda is a unique heritage venue with nearly 900 years of history. Today, it serves as a popular venues for weddings and a range of events.
