Gloucester City Council still hasn't confirmed what will happen to Blackfriars Priory in the long-term, following its closure this June 2026.

The historic and much-loved Blackfriars Priory has officially closed this June 2026.

The closure was announced via a post on the Blackfriars Priory Instagram from team members Holly, Hebe, Sue and Matt, saying: 'What a journey it’s been. Blackfriars Priory has now closed its doors, and we’re saying goodbye with full hearts and immense pride.

'From 200+ weddings to 18 Gloucester History Festivals, award wins to everything in between, theatre, yoga retreats, ghost walks, music, children’s shows and so much more, this place has been filled with life, creativity and unforgettable moments.

'We’ve pushed boundaries, championed sustainability, hosted Gloucestershire’s first eco wedding festival, and even created a Medieval Cocktail Emporium in the middle of a pandemic, all within these incredible historic walls. But what truly made Blackfriars special… was you.

'Thank you to every couple, visitor, performer, partner and supporter who brought this place to life. You’ve been part of something truly magical.'

Gloucester City Council announced it was stepping away from the running of Blackfriars Priory back in January 2026, and while the venue continued to open on Sundays and host bookings until the end of May 2026, it has now closed completely.

The decision to end its lease came as the extent of council's dire financial situation was revealed, following four years of overspending.

In February 2026, the government approved £15.5 million of emergency support for Gloucester City Council to cover its day-to-day running costs, but Blackfriars' long-term future is still uncertain.

An internationally significant building, Blackfriars Priory dates back to the 13th century and is one of the most complete surviving Dominican priories in the country, with the Scriptorium widely accepted as the oldest surviving purpose-built library in northern Europe.

As well as being the home of Gloucester History Festival, the venue has also hosted a regular stage at Gloucester's grassroots music event Underground Festival, and even the Gloucestershire Lifestyle Awards in 2018.

SoGlos spoke to the president of Gloucester History Festival, Sarah Smyth, about the closure who said: ‘The Gloucester History Festival is rooting for the future of the building like everyone else. We’ll have news on the autumn festival soon.’
